Settling a loan early: what you save, and what you do not
What happens when you pay off a personal loan early, why a flat rate changes the answer, and the one decision that actually saves you interest.

Plenty of lenders are vague on this question, because the honest answer is less flattering than "yes, settle early and save". Here is ours, with the arithmetic shown, so you can decide with the real numbers rather than the comfortable version.
What a flat rate means for early settlement
A flat rate is calculated once, on the original amount, for the whole tenure. Borrow RM 10,000 over 60 months at a flat 4.88% a year and the interest is RM 10,000 × 4.88% × 5 years = RM 2,440. Total repayable RM 12,440, divided into 60 instalments of about RM 207.
That interest is part of the sum you agreed to repay from the moment you signed. It does not accrue month by month on a shrinking balance the way a reducing-balance loan does. So paying the remainder early ends the schedule, but it does not unwind the interest.
Say you reach month 36 of that loan. You have paid 36 × RM 207.33, about RM 7,464. The remaining 24 instalments come to roughly RM 4,976, and that is the settlement figure. You clear the debt two years early. You do not get a slice of the RM 2,440 back.
So is there any reason to settle early?
Yes, several, as long as you are clear that interest is not among them.
It frees your monthly income. The instalment stops. If you are planning to apply for something else, that matters more than it sounds: your debt service ratio drops the moment the commitment ends, which can be the difference between an approval and a decline. See what DSR means.
It closes the risk. A loan you have finished cannot fall behind. If your income is about to become less predictable, removing a fixed commitment is worth something that does not appear in an interest calculation.
It ends the record cleanly. A facility settled and closed reads well.
What it is not is an interest-saving strategy. If you have spare cash and a choice between settling a flat-rate loan early and clearing a credit card running at 15% to 18% a year on a reducing balance, the card is the better use of the money almost every time, because that interest really does stop accruing when you pay it.
How to settle, step by step
- Ask for a settlement figure in writing. Message us on WhatsApp and we will confirm the exact amount and the date it is good until. Do not work it out yourself from the schedule; ask.
- Check what the figure includes. It should be the outstanding instalments, plus any late interest already incurred if you have fallen behind, and nothing else.
- Pay into the company account named in your signed agreement. Never into a personal account, and never to someone who messages you with different details. Check the contact first if anything is unusual.
- Keep the receipt. Under section 19 of the Moneylenders Act 1951 you are entitled to a receipt for any payment.
- Get written confirmation that the account is closed. Keep it with your copy of the agreement.

If you are behind rather than ahead
Early settlement is a question for people who are comfortable. If you are struggling, the useful conversation is a different one, and it should happen before a payment is missed rather than after.
What a licensed moneylender may charge on a late payment is tightly limited. Section 17 of the Act allows simple interest of 8% a year on the overdue amount only, counted day by day, and prohibits compound interest entirely. There is no penalty fee on top, because section 23 does not permit one.
Tell us early. A missed instalment that we knew about in advance is a far more workable situation than one we discover.
Common questions
Is there a penalty for settling early? No. There is no early settlement fee with us, and section 23 of the Act does not allow a charge of that kind.
Will I get a rebate on the interest? Not under a flat rate. The interest is fixed for the tenure and is not refunded. We say so in the agreement and in the FAQ rather than leaving you to discover it at settlement.
Can I pay extra each month instead of settling in full? Talk to us about what you have in mind. Under a flat-rate schedule, paying ahead builds a credit against future instalments rather than reducing interest.
How quickly can I get the settlement figure? Usually the same working day, on WhatsApp, confirmed in writing.
Does settling early improve my credit record? It closes the facility cleanly, which reads well. Consistent on-time payments over the life of the loan matter more.
Next steps
If you have not borrowed yet, the tenure decision is the one that counts: flat rate versus effective rate shows how the two numbers relate, and how much you can afford helps you pick an instalment you can carry. If you already have a loan with us, message us for a settlement figure.
