Personal loan without a payslip: what to show instead
No payslip does not mean no proof of income. Bank statements, invoices, platform earnings, EPF and tax records can stand in for one.

Plenty of people in Malaysia earn a good living without ever receiving a payslip: sole proprietors, freelancers, e-hailing and delivery drivers, commission earners, hawkers, contractors and people paid in cash. Their income is real; it just does not come with a form. This guide explains what a licensed money lender looks for instead, and how to present it so the assessment is straightforward.
What a payslip proves, and what can replace it
A payslip answers three questions: who pays you, how much, and how regularly. Any combination of documents that answers the same three questions does the same job.
| If you are | Show |
|---|---|
| Self-employed with a registered business | SSM registration, three to six months of business bank statements, recent invoices or receipts, latest tax filing |
| A freelancer or contractor | Bank statements showing client payments, contracts or engagement letters, invoices, tax filing |
| An e-hailing or delivery rider | The platform's earnings statements for recent months, plus the bank statements the payouts land in |
| On commission | Commission statements from the company, bank statements, and any base pay documentation |
| Paid in cash | Bank statements showing regular deposits, records of sales or jobs, and any licence or permit for the trade |
| A landlord | Tenancy agreements and bank statements showing rent received |
Our eligibility page lists the standard documents for employees, civil servants and the self-employed.
Bank statements do most of the work
Three to six months of statements for the account your income arrives in is the single most useful document. A lender reads them for the same things it would read from a payslip:
- Regularity. Deposits that arrive every week or month, even if the amounts vary.
- Source. Names on the deposits that match your invoices, platform or customers.
- Level. The average across the months, not the best month.
- Commitments. Existing loan instalments going out, which the lender will weigh against a new one.
How irregular income is assessed
Lenders do not expect a freelancer's income to be identical every month. What they look for is a pattern they can rely on. A useful habit before you apply: take your last six months, drop the highest, and average the rest. That is the figure a cautious lender will work from, and it is the figure you should use in the affordability check to decide what instalment is comfortable.
Documents that strengthen an application
- EPF contribution history. If you contribute voluntarily as a self-employed person, or had employer contributions until recently, the statement shows a track record.
- Income tax filing. The latest Form B or BE is strong evidence of annual income, even if it is a year old.
- Contracts and purchase orders. Signed work that has not been paid yet shows income that is coming.
- Licences and permits. A trade licence, a hawker permit or an e-hailing driver card shows the business is real.
Why "no documents needed" is a warning
A lender that does not ask for any evidence of income is not assessing whether you can repay. Either it does not intend to lend at all, and the next message asks for a payment to release the money, or it lends to anyone and relies on pressure to collect. A licensed money lender must assess, must use a prescribed agreement, and never asks for anything before the loan is paid out. Our guide to verifying a licensed money lender shows what to check.

Common questions
I have no bank account; everything is cash. Open one and route your takings through it for a few months before applying. Statements are the evidence that stands in for a payslip.
My spouse has a payslip. Can we apply together? The loan is in one borrower's name and assessed on that person's income and commitments. A household with two incomes can decide which person applies.
Does a personal loan without a payslip cost more? Not with us. The flat rate is the same for everyone. The assessment may lead to a different amount or tenure, but not a different rate.
