No income of your own? What counts as income, and who should apply
A licensed lender can only assess a loan on the borrower's own income. What counts without a payslip, why a spouse's salary cannot be used, and honest options.

"Pinjaman untuk suri rumah" is one of the most common loan searches in Malaysia, and the honest answer is not the one the adverts give. This guide explains why income is the one thing a licensed lender cannot do without, what counts as income when you do not have a payslip, and what to do if you genuinely have none.
Why income is the one requirement that cannot be waived
Under the Moneylenders Act 1951, a licensed money lender must assess each loan and set it out in a prescribed agreement with the instalments filled in. An instalment that has no income to come from is not a loan; it is a debt that will fail, and the law does not let us write it. That is why every licensed lender, including us, asks how the money will be repaid before it asks anything else.
A lender that does not ask is either not going to lend, and is about to ask for a processing fee or deposit instead, or is an illegal lender that relies on pressure to collect. Our guide to what an ah long is describes how that ends.

What counts as income of your own
Many people who describe themselves as having no income actually have some. It counts if it is regular, it is yours, and it can be seen:
| Source | How to show it |
|---|---|
| Selling online, at markets or from home | Bank statements showing customer payments; platform statements; a record of sales |
| Home catering, baking, sewing, hairdressing | Bank statements; invoices or a simple ledger; any licence |
| Tutoring or childcare | Bank statements showing regular transfers from parents |
| Rent from a room or property | Tenancy agreement and bank deposits |
| Commissions, direct sales | Statements from the company and bank statements |
| Part-time or contract work | Contract, payment records, bank statements |
The common thread is the bank statement. If your earnings are in cash, deposit them into an account in your own name for a few months before applying. Our guide on proving income without a payslip goes into the documents in detail.
Why a spouse's salary cannot be used
The agreement is between the lender and one borrower, and that borrower's income is what the instalment is assessed against. A spouse's payslip cannot stand in for the borrower's own, because the spouse is not the one signing. The same applies to a parent's or child's income.
This is not a rule against families borrowing. It simply decides who signs. If the household needs the money and one partner has the income, that partner applies as the borrower. The loan is then paid to that person's account and assessed on that person's commitments.
If you genuinely have no income
There is no honest way to borrow without income, and the dishonest ways all end badly. The options that do exist:
- The earning member of the household applies. The most common answer, and the one the law is designed for.
- Start something small and bankable. Many home businesses begin as a side income and become assessable within a few months once the payments run through a bank account.
- Government assistance. Depending on your circumstances, schemes through the Social Welfare Department (JKM), zakat bodies and state agencies may help with specific needs. These are not loans and do not need repaying.
- AKPK, if the problem is existing debt rather than a new need. Its counselling is free.
Scam scripts aimed at housewives
The adverts use the same words in every language: loans for housewives, no income needed, no documents, guaranteed approval, apply by WhatsApp today. The script continues with a small "processing fee" or "insurance" to release the money, then a second fee, then silence. Paste any such message into our scam message checker, and read our guide to verifying a licensed money lender before replying to anyone.
Common questions
I run a small business from home but it is not registered. Does it count? Yes, if the income is regular and visible in your bank statements. Registration with SSM helps, but the bank record is what shows the income.
Can my husband and I apply together? One borrower signs. The partner with the income applies; the loan is assessed on that person alone.
Can I use my EPF as income? EPF savings are not income, though regular monthly withdrawals after 55 can be. See our guide for pensioners.
Next steps
If you have income of your own, however modest, gather three months of bank statements and message us on WhatsApp. If the earning member of the family will apply, they can start with the calculator and the eligibility page.
